The Big I was built in 1965 as part of the National Interstate Highway Defense project. It allowed traffic to flow through the intersection of I-25 and I-40 above the streets of central Albuquerque. Capital and commerce flowed away from downtown to new satellite centers.

The Big I 2000 will straddle the interchange with segmental "flyover" bridges that will lift traffic through parabolic rises and turns. Visit this monument to through traffic, and take a virtual test ride at www.thebigi.com
